The neutral group is a very small group of store patrons who sided with neither Mrs. Carmody, nor David. It is unknown how many people were in this group, but it can be assumed that these people, like David's group, either retained their sanity and were still rational or did not know who to trust and, therefore, decided not to trust either one of them. In the novella David, while watching Mrs. Carmody preach, says "the people who were not interested had retreated to the back to try to get some sleep", suggesting that there were neutral people in the novella. In the film, some store patrons are not seen with Mrs. Carmody's congregation in any scenes with them.
